Changes in Early L2 Cue-Weighting of Non-Native Speech: Evidence from Learners of Mandarin Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
This study examined how cue-weighting of a non-native speech cue changes during early adult second language (L2) acquisition. Ten native English speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese performed a speeded AX-discrimination task during months 1, 2, and 3 of a first-year Chinese course. Results were compared to ten native Mandarin speakers. Learners’ reaction time and d-prime results became more native-like after two months of classroom study but plateaued thereafter. Multidimensional scaling results showed a similar shift to more native-like cue-weighting as learners attended more to pitch direction and less to pitch height. Despite the improvements, learners’ month 3 configuration of cueweighting differed from that of native speakers; learners appeared to weight pitch end points rather than overall pitch directions. These results suggest that learners’ warping of the weights of dimensions underlying the perceptual space changes rapidly during early acquisition and can plateau like other measures of L2 acquisition. Previous perceptual learning studies may have only captured initial L2 perception gains, not the learning plateau that often follows. New methods of perceptual learning, especially for tonal languages, are needed to advance learners off the plateau.

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners
This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
متن کاملComputation of L2 Speech Rhythm Based on Duration and Fundamental Frequency
Rhythmic characteristics of speech vary between native and non-native speakers. Studies comparing the rhythmic properties of L1 and L2 speech based on rhythm metrics have shown that this relationship is far from straightforward. It seems evidently the case that the difference between native and non-native speech is a complex interaction of a variety of rhythmic cues (duration, F0 and intensity)...
متن کاملIndividual variability in cue-weighting and lexical tone learning.
Speech sound patterns can be discerned using multiple acoustic cues. The relative weighting of these cues is known to be language-specific. Speech-sound training in adults induces changes in cue-weighting such that relevant acoustic cues are emphasized. In the current study, the extent to which individual variability in cue weighting contributes to differential success in learning to use foreig...

In a perception experiment, L1 Mandarin and L1 Japanese novice learners of Korean classified non-tense /s/or tense /s*/initial Korean CV tokens. A mixed effects logistic regression model with acoustic cues as predictor variables was built for each L1 group, and each individual’s regression coefficients were interpreted to be the cue weighting used in identifying Korean /s/ and /s*/. We propose ...
متن کاملThe weighting of vowel quality in native and non-native listeners' perception of English lexical stress
Although vowel quality is an important cue to the perception of English lexical stress, few studies have examined the role this cue plays for non-native speakers. Previous research found that Mandarin speakers had problems using vowel reduction as a cue in English lexical stress production. Assuming native-like perception is a prerequisite to native-like production for non-native speech, this s...
